- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
Cut in Shortening: Add the shortening and use a pastry blender to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add Buttermilk: Pour in the buttermilk and stir until the mixture just begins to come together.
Roll and Cut: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently. Roll the dough to about 1 inch thick and use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits.
Bake: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with melted butter. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Do Not Overwork the Dough: Over-kneading can lead to tough biscuits. Mix until just combined.
- Cold Ingredients: Use cold buttermilk and shortening to ensure flaky biscuits.
- Proper Cutting: Don’t twist the cutter when cutting out the biscuits to ensure they rise evenly.
- Butter Topping: Brushing with melted butter before baking gives a lovely golden crust.
- Baking Placement: Place biscuits close together on the baking sheet for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier sides.
